Have you ever felt like you needed a quick road trip away from it all? Me too, all the time. Maybe you’ve been wanting to go to an island but don’t have a passport or maybe it’s out of your budget. If any of these apply to you, you seriously need to stop sleeping on Key West. It’s a perfect affordable getaway and you will definitely fulfill that desire you have to visit an island until you can actually get there. Key West is about 160 miles from Miami, Fl. After millions of damage caused by hurricane Irma, most towns are still trying to bounce back from the deficit in tourism, however, most establishments have been rehabilitated and back open for business.
This past weekend, my boyfriend and I decided to get away and take the quick road trip to beautiful Key West. It was going to be a 4 hour drive so we gassed up, grabbed some snacks and hit the road. The first town you’ll hit in the keys is Islamorada. A more quiet and less expensive part of the Keys. A lot of people stay in Islamorada and drive down to Key West for a day. We decided against this, neither one of us had ever been to Key West and wanted a full experience. The views on the way to the resort are surreal! There’s a 7 mile bridge over the Atlantic before you arrive that has only one lane going in each direction. If you have anxiety like me, that road will freak you out. I was so happy when it was over.
We reserved a stay at Oceans Edge Resort located at the Marina for $288 a night. This price included taxes and resort fees. When we arrived the staff was extremely friendly, we were even upgraded from a standard ocean view room to their king suite. This room included a living area and ocean view. We were informed about the six pools, the fitness center, restaurant, bar, Starbucks and all of the water activities included in the resort fees. As I said before, it’s located on the marina so the resort is also surrounded by beautiful yachts and sailboats.
Quick budget tip: Prior to our stay I checked Air Bnb for housing and came across tons of affordable fully furnished sailboats for rent. If you want a full experience on the water, this would be a perfect option for you. If you don’t sail, no worries the boat won’t leave the marina during your stay, but if you do it will be an even better experience. I saw people getting off these boats and using the hotel amenities so it must’ve been included with the stay on the boats at this particular marina.
Our private entry rooms were modern and immaculate, but the view? I could give you a million adjectives but it still wouldn’t add up to how beautiful it was. The balconies weren’t as private as we expected, but, our neighbors were extremely respectful and we hardly ever seen them.
Although the hotel provided a shuttle, we decided to drive down to Duval St. Duval Street is a road that stretches a few blocks long with hole in the wall bars and souvenir shops. We wanted to keep it traditional so we decided to eat at Sloppy Joe’s, a bar frequented by Ernest Hemingway, a previous Key West resident. The menu options aren’t broad but the food was good and extremely affordable.
Our Key West trip cost us less than 400 for our nights stay. 200 per person is a great price for a place that offers so much. Your prices may be a little higher if you’re flying in, but trust me it’s worth every penny. There’s also an option to make this a longer more luxurious trip at 5 star resort. Key West is definitely a trip for travelers of all walks of life so add it to your bucket list immediately. Thank me later. lol
