Have you ever printed your bank statement and did a full analytic review? If not, you should. Try pulling the last three months of statements and highlighting where your money is spent the most. My biggest money guzzler is FOOD! When I say food I definitely do not mean groceries. I can have a fridge full of groceries and still want to dine out. I live in a extremely diverse city where the options are massive. Everywhere you turn there’s a restaurant serving something you never tried with drinks specials to go with it. It’s like a never ending vacation! A blessing and a curse at the same time. When I look at my bank statements and tally up all the money spent on dining out I am completely embarrassed. Just yesterday I decided to embark a new journey. A journey that would be better for my body and my pockets. I decided to add a limit on dining out and focus on eating at home more. If you’re finding yourself in the same struggle let’s take this on together.
The first thing we need to do is figure out why we’re dining out so much. What sticks out the most for me is what I’m cooking at home. Take for example, one of my closest friends and her husband are chefs. They make these amazing meals at home and barely eat out. They hardly eat out because the food they cook is so interesting that nothing in a restaurant is exciting anymore. I think I’m bored with what I usually prepare, leading me to get out and try new foods at different restaurants. If you’re on the same page, you and I both need to invest in more cookbooks or download more apps like Tasty, this will give us more ideas on what to make. I don’t eat pork or beef so I’m running out of ideas of what to cook. These cookbooks will put our interests back in the kitchen or help us cook for those who aren’t the best at it. I won’t say “let’s meal prep” because people that dine out a lot love eating new food. We don’t want leftovers. We are spoiled! These cookbooks will us find small and affordable meals so we won’t have to meal prep for the week with the same meal spread out for 5 days.
The other thing we love about dining out are the drinks. I have my own personal stock of liquor but have no idea how to make a good drink. Aging has really changed what I can and can’t drink anymore. Any hard liquor alone can take me out! Now, I’ve gone back to my amateur days, I can only tolerate cocktails as long as they aren’t too sweet and have rum somewhere in the equation. Once we learn how to make the drinks we love we won’t have to spend thousands to have someone make them for us.
Let’s be realistic, we love trying new restaurants and new foods. We love being foodies. Eliminating the option to explore isn’t logical. We need to allow ourselves at least two weekend days a month to enjoy a new restaurant. I don’t know about you but I cook for my child everyday and then am meeting someone for dinner or lunch! It’s ridiculous. Cutting down to just two days a month is going to save us so much money. I’m so excited!
